Light festivals and Christmas markets

The Tampere Light Festival (Valoviikot) runs 23.10.–1.11.2026. According to the city, all of the programme is free, and the light artworks of the opening celebration can be seen in the evenings from 18 to 21. 2026 is the 60th anniversary year of the festival. The Lux Helsinki light art festival is held 30.12.2026–6.1.2027 and begins on New Year's Eve.

The Valoviikot light festival opens on Friday 23.10. at 19.00, and the city's lights come on every evening as dusk falls. The first Valoviikot were held in autumn 1966. An evening walk through the light installations in the city centre is easy to combine with dinner or coffee, and the route can be viewed in advance on the event's pages.

The Helsinki St Thomas Market runs 27.11.–22.12.2026. The market is open Monday to Thursday and on Sundays from 11:00 to 19:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays from 11:00 to 20:00. Dress warmly for outdoor events and combine the walk with, for example, a café or a sauna.

Museums on free days

HAM Helsinki Art Museum is free to enter on the last Friday of the month from 11:00 to 19:00, which in autumn 2026 means 30.10. and 27.11. At other times an adult ticket costs 20 € and a discount ticket 12 €. Museum Card holders can always enter HAM without a separate ticket.

In Turku, the Wäinö Aaltonen Museum WAM opens to the public in renewed form on 31.10.2026, and the opening weekend is 31.10.–1.11.2026. The new museum is a good reason to head to the banks of the Aura river.

Is the Museum Card worth it for a couple

The Museum Card costs 86 € for 12 months and gives access to over 360 museums. The card is personal, so each of you needs your own. Validity starts only from the first museum visit, and the extension period costs 79 €. The card can also be paid with a monthly fee of 7,45 euros, but culture benefits cannot be used for the monthly fee.

If you visit museums several times a year, the card pays for itself quickly: for example, a standard ticket to HAM is €20.

Sauna for two

A public sauna is a classic Finnish date. At Kulttuurisauna in Helsinki a 90-minute session costs €17 (discount €13). The sauna does not accept groups, and a party of more than two counts as a group, so two people can go in. Evening sessions must be booked in advance, and cash is not accepted.

At Löyly, a two-hour public sauna session costs 29 €, and the price includes a towel and washing products. The saunas are shared, so swimwear is mandatory. In Tampere, the mixed sauna sessions at Rajaportti sauna are on Thursdays, and the mixed sauna fee is 8 €.

Films and nature

According to the Finnish Cinema Association, the average price of a cinema ticket in 2025 was 13,60 €, so a night at the cinema for two costs about 27 € in tickets. There were 188 cinemas and 383 screens, and visits totalled 6,3 million.

Entry to national parks is free. For example, according to Metsähallitus, Nuuksio had 298,700 visits in 2025. A short day trip with a packed lunch is an affordable and peaceful way to get acquainted.

For a nature trip, choose a short marked route with a rest stop along the way. In autumn and winter there is little daylight, so set off in good time and bring a headlamp, a warm drink and seat pads.

How much a date costs

Once prices are known, the evening's budget can be calculated in advance and you can agree who pays what. Below are examples for two people using this guide's prices. Coffee, food and travel come on top of these.

In 2027 Valentine's Day falls on Sunday 14.2. It is worth booking evening slots at popular saunas and restaurants well in advance; for example, the Kulttuurisauna booking calendar shows slots two weeks ahead.

  • Valoviikot or HAM's free Friday: 0 €
  • Rajaportin mixed sauna for two: 16 €
  • cinema tickets at the average price: about 27 €
  • Kulttuurisauna for two: €34
  • HAM at full price for two: 40 €
  • Löyly public sauna for two: 58 €
